The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) has confirmed that 53-year-old Nelson Darcy Salisbury was the victim on Monday.
According to Don Webster, spokesperson for HEMSI, a call was received by News 19 at approximately 2:23 p.m. regarding an incident that occurred in the vicinity of Cleveland Avenue, specifically near the intersection of Church Street Northwest and Dallas Avenue Northwest.
A train on Cleveland Avenue struck an individual, as confirmed by an HPD spokesperson.
A train collision that occurred in downtown Huntsville on Sunday marked the second time a person has been killed by a train in the Church Street area since February of last year.
According to Belinda Stapler, a nearby resident, the presence of first responders and the train being at a complete stop indicated that something had gone wrong on the scene, as she shared with News 19’s Darryl Burke.
Stapler was filled with fear as he recollected the incident. “I hope nobody died, I hope they’re okay,” he shared, still shaken by the memory.
After hours of investigation by HPD, officials had to close the road down. Stapler expressed her deep sorrow for the family and friends of the person involved in the incident.
Stapler expressed deep sorrow and empathy for the family, stating that their impending tragedy would be incredibly hurtful. “I feel sorry for that family,” he said.
Stapler is urging everyone to reflect upon the value of their lives in the wake of the recent tragedy that occurred on Sunday. He emphasizes the importance of treasuring every moment, as anything can be taken away in an instant.
In an interview with News 19, she emphasized the importance of staying safe and being aware of one’s surroundings. “It’s crucial to watch where you’re going and take necessary precautions. Along with that, we should always be grateful for what we have and offer our prayers to God,” she said.
According to HPD, the investigation is currently ongoing.
