According to a former presidential advisor to Donald Trump, he is “not as sharp” as he was during the 2016 race.
Alyssa Farah Griffin stated that the former president was “not the strongest fighter the Republicans could have right now” and that he had always had difficulty recalling facts or names.
It comes as concerns about Mr. Trump’s, 77, and President Joe Biden’s, 81, mental health persist. Despite this, the two men will almost certainly fight again in November.
According to a recent poll conducted by The New York Times/Siena College, 47% of respondents strongly agreed with the statement that Mr. Biden is too elderly to be effective, while 26% somewhat agreed.
21 percent strongly felt that Mr. Trump is too elderly, while another 21% agreed somewhat.
Over the weekend, a crowd of Trump fans gathering in Richmond, Virginia, to hear the former president speak fell silent after he appeared to mix up Joe Biden and Barack Obama once more.
“Shortly after we win the presidency, I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled,” Mr. Trump stated on Saturday.
“I know them both well, and we shall bring peace through strength. Get that war ended. It’s a nasty war. And Putin has so little respect for Obama that he’s starting to use the phrase “nuclear,” Mr. Trump said, perhaps under the impression that Mr. Biden’s former boss is still in power.
He has made the same mistake multiple times and has attempted to explain it and other gaffes, such as confusing Democratic former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with his Republican competitor for the 2024 nomination, Nikki Haley, by claiming he is doing it on purpose for “humor” and “sarcasm.”.
In an interview with CNN, Ms. Griffin, Mr. Trump’s special assistant from October 2017 to September 2019, was questioned about how frequently Mr. Trump misunderstood facts in relation to recent campaign gaffes.
“I’ve said it before: He’s not as sharp as he was in 2016 or 2020.” For some reason, that does not always come across the same way to voters,” she explained.
Ms. Griffin, a co-host of ABC’s The View and a political pundit, also questioned why people don’t perceive this as a problem, noting that the mix-ups have become worse.
“But Donald Trump is not the strongest fighter that Republicans could have right now, and it’s remarkable how many voters don’t see age as an issue because he is only three and a-half years younger than President Joe Biden,” she went on to explain.
“But there’s something about how they conduct themselves that is perceived quite differently… I mean, things have become worse, not better. He isn’t as keen as he once was.
