Former Alabama School Bus Driver Pleads Guilty, Most Charges Dropped

Mocobizscene- A former school bus driver in Alabama made headlines on December 12, 2023. According to a report by WAFF, the driver, Rhonda Barksdale, chose to plead guilty to driving a school bus while under the influence of alcohol. The incident, which occurred in September 2022, involved children aged five to 11 on board during Barksdale’s chaotic ride.

Barksdale was driving 40 children when Heather Malone saw her swerving on the road and decided to stop her in September of last year. Malone said she at first, thought the bus driver was having a health scare. However, when she got on the bus Malone said she knew right away that Barksdale was intoxicated.

Barksdale pleaded guilty to 40 counts of reckless endangerment, one for each student under her care while driving. However, in her sentencing, only six charges will be considered.

Barksdale will serve a year sentence split between the jail and the community corrections program in Franklin Cty. She will also have two years of probation and must surrender her CDL license within 30 days.

Barksdale was charged with 40 counts of reckless endangerment, one for each pupil she was responsible for while driving. As a result of her guilty plea, her sentence will only address six offences.
