Mocobizscene- According to court records in Jefferson Parish, a driver has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing the death of a 52-year-old man. The driver admitted to running a red light at a Metairie intersection with a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit.
Eugene Kilpatrick, aged 35 from Old Jefferson, admitted his guilt in vehicular homicide on January 25.
According to investigators from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Kilpatrick was allegedly driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.20%, which is significantly higher than the legal limit of 0.08%. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on the I-10 Service Road while Kilpatrick was traveling westbound in a Chevrolet Avalanche.
Authorities said that Kilpatrick ran a red light at Bonnabel Boulevard and collided with the front driver’s side of Harper’s Ford pickup truck.
After crossing the intersection, Kilpatrick’s truck came to a halt, covering an additional distance of 350 feet.
During the sentencing hearing on January 25th, Harper’s sister delivered a victim impact statement, as stated in court records.
Judge Danyelle Taylor from the 24th Judicial District Court has sentenced Kilpatrick to a five-year prison term. As per court records, three of those years must be served without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
