Effective Vehicle Restrictions on Interstate 79, 86 and 90

On Interstates 79, 86, and 90, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has imposed limits on vehicles.

Tier 1 vehicle limitations are in force as of Monday at 8 p.m. on:

  • I-79 from the Mercer County Interstate 80 interchange to the I-79 terminus in Erie County
  • I-86 from I-90 to the state border of New York
  • I-90 from the border of Ohio to the border of New York

These cars are prohibited from using the impacted routes under Tier 1 restrictions:

  • Tractors without attached trailers; Tractors pulling tank, open, or lightly loaded enclosed trailers
  • Tractors pulling tandem trailers that are empty or sparingly loaded, enclosed box trucks or freight delivery trucks that are either lightly laden or emptied and fit the definition of a CMV
  • Cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and other passenger vehicles pulling trailers
  • Motorhomes and recreational vehicles, Commercial buses, motor coaches, and school buses
  • The right lane must be used by commercial vehicles not subject to the restrictions.

Depending on the situation, additional speed limits may be added on other interstates. According to PennDOT, the limitation is meant to help ensure the interstates stay open during the most challenging parts of the winter storm. PennDOT will lift the travel restrictions when the weather becomes better.
