A police officer from Washington, DC, was suspended after he led Virginia police on a high-speed chase. The chase came to a crashing halt when his Tesla collided with another car, causing injuries to both his passenger and the driver of the other vehicle, according to officials.
Peter McCauley, a 25-year-old man, was arrested last Wednesday night by Virginia State Police. He was caught driving at a speed of 95 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-395 in northern Virginia, according to a report by 7NewsDC.
According to court documents, McCauley allegedly tried to evade a state trooper who had attempted to stop his car. He reportedly accelerated and reached speeds of 119 mph as he maneuvered onto Seminary Road. McCauley ran a red light, causing a Honda to collide with his Tesla.
The collision caused McCauley’s car to veer out of control, eventually coming to a halt and leaving his female passenger injured. According to the police, the collision resulted in the Honda forcefully colliding with a concrete barrier on the road, causing injury to the female driver.
Both women were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment of their minor injuries. McCauley was apprehended and faced charges of one felony count of eluding the police.
The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department was informed about McCauley’s arrest on Thanksgiving Day.
The officer’s police powers were immediately revoked and he was placed on non-contact status by MPD’s Internal Affairs Division, according to a statement from the department. The incident is currently being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Division. In June 2020, McCauley became a member of the force. However, he is now the second off-duty MPD officer to be arrested this month for careless driving.
Officer John Bewley was taken into custody on November 11 for charges of driving under the influence (DUI), resisting arrest, and obstructing justice. According to court documents, he arrived at the scene in his police cruiser with the intention of interfering with another DUI investigation involving his girlfriend. The MPD announced that Bewley has been placed on “non-contact status” while they continue to investigate the case.
