During a news conference on Tuesday, officials announced the arrest. Two employees from Walgreens have been charged in a string of robberies that took place at a store in D.C.’s Chinatown neighbourhood, according to officials from the MPD and FBI. The charges come as a result of ongoing investigations into the series of incidents.

MPD Chief Pamela Smith reported that overnight on Monday, the police carried out three search warrants in connection with the robberies.

Michael Robinson, a 33-year-old manager at Walgreens, and his 26-year-old nephew Gianni Robinson have been arrested following the execution of search warrants. Chief Smith stated that both individuals have been charged with conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery.

“The defendants utilized the insider information obtained by one of them, who happened to be an employee at the store, to execute the series of robberies,” stated Dave Sundberg, Assistant Director in Charge at FBI Washington.

Officials have reported that the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Kamanye Williams from Northwest D.C., entered the Walgreens and proceeded to follow the SPO into a back room. Once inside, he managed to disarm the officer and then made an attempt to rob the business.

A second SPO was notified about the ongoing robbery and took action by firing his weapon at Williams, causing him to sustain serious injuries. Chief Smith reported on Tuesday that Williams is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Williams is currently facing charges for this particular armed robbery, as well as six other similar incidents that occurred at Walgreens stores starting from July 2023. Chief Smith pointed out that there had been almost one armed robbery per month within the premises.

The chief praised the collaboration between MPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, stating that detectives were able to connect the cases through their joint efforts. The chief stated that Williams would enter a back room inside the Walgreens and wait for an employee to enter before carrying out the robbery.

Chief Smith confirmed that Williams was captured on video leaving through the same door in each case, as detectives obtained the crucial evidence.

Two employees of Walgreens have been charged in connection with a string of robberies at a store in the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., according to officials from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the FBI.

According to officers, he possessed knowledge that only a store manager would typically have, such as the access code required to enter the employee area. After Williams was shot on Sunday, the chief stated that the investigation was expedited, prompting officers to swiftly carry out search warrants. These warrants were executed simultaneously at various locations in both D.C. and Maryland.

Williams collaborated with manager Michael Robinson in carrying out four armed robberies, as uncovered by the investigation.

“We have uncovered a conspiracy that instilled fear within the community and consistently undermined its sense of security. This serves as yet another instance of a group of suspects repeatedly targeting the same area,” stated Chief Smith during the announcement of the arrests on Tuesday.

According to the chief, Williams contacted both Michael and Gianni before and after the robberies took place. Additionally, video footage revealed that Williams and Gianni were seen together prior to a robbery in January.

Officials uncovered a shocking revelation that the manager was not only in constant communication with either his nephew or Williams during the robberies, but court documents also allege that Robinson even drove Williams to his own store to carry out one of the crimes.

During the execution of the warrants, law enforcement officers were able to recover four firearms, along with multiple magazines and a bulletproof vest. Officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing and they are committed to uncovering the complete extent of the conspiracy.

“The defendants’ focus may have been on this particular business, but their actions had a far-reaching impact on the entire neighborhood. Business owners and community members alike were left feeling fearful and uneasy,” stated Sundberg.

Chief Smith expressed his understanding of the concerns raised by the community regarding the incidents in the area and acknowledged the impact these robberies had on a business that serves as a crucial resource for its customers.
