In a recent interview with Vogue France, Celine Dion opened up about her battle with a neurological disorder that leads to progressive muscle stiffness. Since being diagnosed in December 2022, Dion has made the difficult decision to put a pause on her touring schedule and has chosen to stay mostly out of the public eye. However, she did make a surprise appearance at the Grammys in February, where she received a tremendous standing ovation.

“I haven’t conquered the disease, as it still resides within me and will always be a part of my life. I hold onto the hope that scientific research will bring about a miracle cure, but for now, I must adapt and learn to coexist with it. This is me, now living with Stiff Person Syndrome,” Dion shared with Vogue France. “I dedicate five days a week to rigorous physical and vocal therapy. I focus on strengthening my toes, knees, calves, fingers, singing, and voice… It’s a journey of acceptance and letting go of self-doubt. Initially, I would often question: why me? How did this happen? What did I do to deserve this? Is this my own doing?”

Dion expressed that she had two options: either to train like an athlete and put in immense effort, or to give up and indulge in self-isolation, where she would listen to her own songs, stand in front of the mirror, and sing to herself.

“I am fully committed to working with a dedicated medical team, giving my all from head to toe. My ultimate aspiration is to witness the grandeur of the Eiffel Tower once more!”

Dion confirmed that she has not yet made any plans for future performances as she focuses on building her strength.

“I’ve been telling myself for four years that I won’t go back, that I’m ready, but then I second-guess myself. As it stands now, I can’t confidently say that I’ll be ready in four months,” she expressed. “I’m unsure… I’ll have to listen to my body. However, I don’t want to just wait around. It’s emotionally challenging to live day by day. It’s tough, and I’m putting in a lot of effort, and tomorrow will be even more difficult. But one thing that will never cease is my willpower. It’s my passion, my dream, my determination.”
