The arrest of the caretaker of an impaired elderly victim has been announced by Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. The Elder and Vulnerable Adult Exploitation Task Force is currently investigating the alleged misappropriation of the victim’s funds.
During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Fernandez Rundle informed reporters that Lina Gomez, an 89-year-old woman, is the victim of advanced Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Gomez had lost the ability to speak and had no family members available to provide care for her. According to Fernandez Rundle, Zoraida Denis Mollinea, the 78-year-old defendant, had become friends with Gomez in 2016.
According to reports, Mollinea managed to acquire a power of attorney, successfully accessed the victim’s bank accounts, and eventually proceeded to sell the victim’s home.
The home was sold for a sum of approximately $400,000, according to reports. Mollinea, allegedly, took the money earned from the sale and deposited it into a bank account. Mollinea is currently facing charges that include grand theft, elderly exploitation, and a scheme to defraud. The reporter inquired about the condition of the victim.
According to Fernandez Rundle, she is not in a good condition. I am sorry to report that the latest update confirms that she has been rescued and is currently receiving medical attention. Finally, she will be in the care of professionals, where she should have been for the past five years.
According to Fernandez Rundle, the State Attorney’s Office is collaborating with all the hospital providers to ensure that Gomez receives all the necessary support and resources. She said that it is probably a complete medical overview at this point. During the press conference, Fernandez Rundle also discussed two arrests that had been made in relation to a human trafficking case.
