Bus Driver Attacked for Rejecting Passengers’ Ticket Photo

BAYONNE, NJ – On December 27, Bayonne Police detained two people who were allegedly planning to board a New Jersey Transit bus after they attacked the driver and took his cell phone.

Captain Eric Amato stated that the incident started just before three o’clock in the afternoon when Elvira L. Salas, 24, of Bayonne, and Isaac Jaquez, 28, of Jersey City, tried to board the bus near 48th Street and JFK Boulevard.

When police arrived on the site following their notification of the event, they discovered that the bus driver had been assaulted in the face. Subsequently, the victim stated that Jaquez and Salas attempted to board the bus with a kid in a stroller, but were refused entry because the photo they had taken of their bus pass did not serve as official documentation of their ticket purchase. The driver claimed that after an altercation that descended into violence, Salas spat on the victim and Jaquez punched him in the face with a clinched hand.

The victim’s cell phone dropped to the ground during the assault, and Jaquez picked it up before he and Salas left the area. The complaint goes on to say that Jaquez then went into a nearby house and told the owner he needed assistance. Soon later, the homeowner called the local police to report that Jaquez had just come inside and asked for assistance.

Salas was later found by the police at 49th Street, where they claim he was found with the toddler and the victim’s cell phone.

After being placed under arrest, the two suspects were accused of a number of offenses, including aggravated assault, theft, and endangering the welfare of a minor.
