Body of Colorado hiker missing since August discovered, dog alive and with body

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office reported that they had discovered the remains of Rich Moore, a 71-year-old resident of Pagosa Springs, along with his dog, who was found alive and beside him. Moore and his dog had gone missing on August 19 after setting out with a goal to climb Blackhead Peak, situated to the east of Pagosa Springs.

According to a press release, a local hunter discovered the remains of Moore in the Lower Blanco drainage basin on October 30, with his loyal white Jack Russell terrier, Finney, by his side.

The sheriff’s office and search and rescue teams went to the area the next day to locate, identify, and retrieve Moore’s body. They also found Finney and took her to a nearby veterinary hospital for a check-up and care. Thankfully, Finney has been reunited with her family.

The officials have not disclosed the cause-of-death in the case. However, it is worth mentioning that there is no suspicion of foul play.

At an impressive 12,500 feet of elevation, Blackhead Peak towers above the surrounding terrain. According to a trail report on Summit Post, the typical route to the summit spans about three miles one-way. The Rio Blanco is situated in a valley to the southeast of the mountain’s peak, while the standard route to the summit commences on the northwest side of the hill.
