Biden assures Baltimore of support following bridge collapse

President Joe Biden expressed his concern and support for the residents affected by the Baltimore bridge collapse during his remarks on Tuesday. He assured them that his administration is committed to standing by their side for as long as it takes to address the situation.

“It is my intention for the federal government to cover the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. I anticipate the Congress to back my endeavor,” stated Biden confidently from the White House.

“This job will require some time,” stated the president firmly, emphasizing, “We refuse to leave until it is fully completed.”

The ship’s personnel promptly notified the Maryland Department of Transportation about losing control of the vessel. Thanks to their quick action, local authorities were able to close the bridge before the ship collided with it. President Biden emphasized that this timely response undoubtedly saved lives.

Early Tuesday morning, a cargo ship collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in the near-total collapse of the bridge and the suspension of vessel traffic to and from the Port of Baltimore.

A search-and-rescue operation is currently in progress as divers and emergency personnel tirelessly search the Patapsco River for individuals who are believed to have fallen into the icy waters below after the bridge collapsed. Officials have reported that at least six individuals remain unaccounted for.

According to Biden, the crash seems to have been a “dreadful accident.”

The top priority, according to him, is to prioritize the search and rescue operation.

President Biden, acknowledging his familiarity with the bridge as he has crossed it numerous times, expressed his intention to visit Baltimore at the earliest opportunity.

“The president announced that ship traffic and operations at the port of Baltimore have been temporarily halted. It is necessary to ensure the clearance of the channel before resuming normal ship traffic,” the president stated.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic accident, including the families who are anxiously waiting for updates on their loved ones,” expressed Biden. “In such circumstances, every passing minute feels like an eternity, and the uncertainty is truly heart-wrenching. This is an incredibly difficult situation.”

“We are extremely grateful for the courageous rescuers who promptly rushed to the scene and for the people of Baltimore. I want to emphasize that we stand with you,” the president expressed. “We will remain by your side, no matter how long it takes. As the governor rightly said, you embody the resilience of Maryland, the strength of Baltimore, and we will overcome this challenge united.”

According to the White House, President Biden held a meeting with key members of his team on Tuesday morning to discuss the ongoing response efforts. During the briefing, he instructed them to ensure that all federal resources are readily accessible and utilized.
