Bicyclists face high risk of danger in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida

According to a recent study, Louisiana ranks among the most perilous states in the United States for bicyclists. The study reveals that Shreveport, Louisiana, is an especially hazardous area for cyclists.

Sweeney Merrigan Law LLP conducted a study analyzing the number of fatal incidents involving cyclists in each state, using data from the NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System. The firm also took into account the population size of each state when comparing the number of fatalities.

The study utilized data from the year 2021.

In 2021, Louisiana witnessed the unfortunate demise of 34 cyclists, which translates to an average of 0.74 fatalities per 100,000 residents.

Mississippi River boasts of thousands of miles of scenic routes and trails in the state.

According to J. Tucker Merrigan, who serves as the Managing Partner at Sweeney Merrigan Law LLP, there has been a notable surge in bike trips across the United States. In fact, he revealed that there has been a significant increase of 37% in bike trips from 2019 to 2022.

According to Tucker, the number of cyclists on the roads has significantly increased, reaching an all-time high.

According to recent statistics, Florida and Louisiana were ranked as the two most dangerous states for cyclists. Shockingly, Florida recorded 197 cycling fatalities within a year, making it the riskiest state for cyclists.

It’s alarming to know that Florida cyclists accounted for a staggering 5.3% of all traffic fatalities in the state for this year. Moreover, according to recent findings, Jacksonville has been identified as the most hazardous city for cyclists in Florida.

16 bicycle fatalities were reported in Mississippi, making it the fourth state on the list.

According to the study, urban areas in the United States account for 85% of fatal cycling crashes.
