A crowd of people gathered at the NYPD 70th Precinct on Tuesday afternoon to honor the memory of Detective Dillon Stewart on the 18th anniversary of his tragic death.
Stewart lost his life in 2005 while on duty, when he was shot while trying to stop a person driving a stolen vehicle.
Stewart’s legacy lives on through his loving wife, Leslyn, and their two young daughters. Even after eighteen years, the NYPD and Stewart family still uphold the tradition of organizing a blood drive on the anniversary of his passing as a tribute to the late detective.
“I remember the night my dad was killed vividly. He was in desperate need of blood, and it warms my heart to see people still donating in his memory,” shared Samantha Stewart, the youngest daughter of Detective Dillon Stewart.
Stewart’s oldest daughter, Alexis Stewart, has chosen to pursue a career path similar to her father’s. She now works as a civilian with the NYPD in Lower Manhattan.
“I always keep him close to my heart,” she said, gently caressing the locket around her neck. On one side, there was a picture of her father, and on the other, his shield number.
The Stewart family expressed their desire to maintain this tradition for years to come.
