Polling shows that a majority of Americans, 55%, are now against Israel’s military action in Gaza

According to a recent Gallup poll, the military action taken by Israel in Gaza is now disapproved by a narrow majority of Americans, with 55% expressing their disapproval. On the other hand, only 36% of Americans approve of Israel’s military action.

According to a Gallup poll, the approval of Israel’s military action has seen a decline compared to late last year. In November 2023, one month after the war began, 50% of the respondents approved of the military action, while 45% expressed their disapproval.

Gallup conducted a survey from March 1 to March 20 to obtain the latest polling results.

Hamas initiated an unexpected terrorist assault on Israel on October 7th, claiming the lives of a minimum of 1,200 individuals, as reported by Israeli officials. The Gaza Health Ministry, under the control of Hamas, has documented over 32,000 Palestinian fatalities and more than 73,000 injuries in Gaza since the commencement of Israel’s ongoing ground operations and aerial bombardment of the region.

Approval for Israel’s actions has experienced a decrease of 18% among both Democrats and independents, while Republicans have seen a decline of 7%. Previously, independents had mixed opinions on the military action, but they are now more inclined to oppose it.

According to the Gallup poll, President Joe Biden’s handling of the situation in the Middle East has received an approval rating of 27%. However, his overall job approval rating stands at 40%, which reflects a slight increase from the previous surveys conducted in October and November where it was at 37%.

According to a news release by Gallup, the issue in question does not rank high when Americans are asked about the most important problem facing the U.S. Similarly, it does not rank high when Americans assess various international issues as critical threats to U.S. vital interests. However, Gallup suggests that this issue could potentially harm the president by discouraging voter turnout among individuals who deeply care about the issue and are dissatisfied with his handling of the situation.

The U.N. Security Council has taken a significant step by passing a resolution on Monday. This resolution calls for a cease-fire to be observed during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Notably, this marks a departure from the U.S.’s previous stance, as it has refrained from using its veto power to block such resolutions. In this case, the U.S. chose to abstain from voting, thereby allowing the resolution to pass.

Despite calls from the United Nations and the international community for a cease-fire, Israel and Hamas have yet to reach an agreement.

An overwhelming majority of American adults (74%) are closely following the news regarding the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict, showcasing the high level of interest and concern among the population.

According to a news release by Gallup, the disapproval of Israel’s military action remains consistent regardless of the level of attention Americans are giving to the conflict. However, those who are less engaged are more likely to have no opinion on the matter, leading to lower levels of approval compared to those who are paying closer attention.

The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, as aid groups sound the alarm over the dire conditions faced by Palestinians. Frustration is mounting among these organizations due to the limited access to aid caused by Israeli restrictions.

Doctors working for aid organizations witnessed a harrowing situation at a hospital earlier this week, where patients were enduring severe malnutrition and succumbing to infections. The scene they encountered was beyond imagination, with the suffering and loss of life being truly heartbreaking.

According to a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification initiative, there is a potential for a famine to occur in north Gaza between mid-March and the end of May. This can be prevented if an immediate cease-fire takes place, allowing for the consistent delivery of essential food and supplies.
