Alabama Football Legend Award for 2023 will go to Dr. James Andrews

Dr James Andrews, an acclaimed orthopaedic surgeon and revered sports figure, has been honoured with the prestigious 2023 Alabama Football Legend Award. This esteemed accolade, presented by Regions Bank in partnership with the Camellia Bowl, recognizes Dr Andrews for his outstanding contributions to orthopaedic surgery and his significant impact on the world of sports.

Dr Andrews is set to be honoured with the award during the Alabama Football Legend luncheon on Friday, December 22. The prestigious event will take place at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery.

“During my time practising with Dr Hughston, I had the opportunity to provide care for teams and athletes in Alabama. I was truly amazed by the exceptional talent among Alabama’s elite athletes,” expressed Dr. Andrews. He further revealed, “This experience ignited a genuine passion within me to utilize my orthopaedics and sports medicine skills for the benefit of athletes throughout the state. I aim to help them prevent injuries and recover, enabling them to pursue their sports dreams.” Dr. Andrews expressed his deep gratitude for being chosen as the recipient of the Alabama Football Legend Award, which Regions Bank presents.”

Dr. Andrews strongly focuses on sports medicine, with particular expertise in knee injuries, arthroscopy, and injuries to the shoulder and elbow in throwing athletes.

“We are delighted and privileged to acknowledge the career and achievements of Dr. Andrews, a highly renowned figure, not just in our state but also in the world of sports,” expressed Johnny Williams, the executive director of the Camellia Bowl.

Dr. Andrews has treated an impressive roster of athletes, including Bo Jackson, Charles Barkley, Roger Clemens, Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, Drew Brees, John Smoltz, Triple H, Brett Favre, Marcus Lattimore, and Adrian Petersen.

Dr. Andrews established Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham and has been Chairman of the Board and Medical Director at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham since 1986.

Dr. Andrews has an impressive track record, having served as an Orthopedist for prestigious institutions such as Auburn University, The University of Alabama, and Tuskegee University. Additionally, he has provided his expertise to professional sports teams like the Washington Commanders, Tampa Rays, and the LPGA.

Andrews was also a member of the 2008 USOC Olympic delegation in Beijing, China.

He has been recognized with multiple awards and honours for his exceptional orthopaedics contributions and dedication to serving the community. Dr. Andrews obtained his bachelor’s degree and attended LSU for medical school. While studying there, he won the SEC championship in pole vaulting as a miners track and field team member. member
