Abortion rights signature drive begins today In Missouri

MBS News – The effort to legalize abortion in Missouri kicks off on Tuesday.

The group ‘Missourians for Constitutional Freedom’ is organizing signature collection events throughout the state. They have a 90-day window to collect 185,000 signatures needed to place the matter on the ballot.

Republicans in Jefferson City are aiming to increase the difficulty of amending the state constitution. The initiative petition process, which previously facilitated the legalization of both recreational and medical marijuana in the state, is their target.

Historically successful signature collection campaigns, like the 2020 initiative to expand Medicaid and the 2022 drive to legalize recreational marijuana, started their canvassing efforts earlier in the election cycle.

However, the campaign for abortion rights might gain from heightened public interest, as the topic has ascended to prominence in national discussions after the U.S. Supreme Court’s pivotal 2022 ruling that permitted states to ban the procedure.
