A historic Kansas City castle at 18th and Vine is up for sale—take a look!

The 18th and Vine Jazz District in Kansas City, Missouri, is home to an iconic historic landmark. This significant site, located adjacent to the Vine Street Brewing Co., is now available for purchase as part of a larger real estate offering. Spanning an impressive 21.47 acres of land, this opportunity presents potential buyers with a unique chance to own a piece of history in this renowned district.

The Kansas City Workhouse Castle, situated on 2001 Vine St., holds a significant place in history as it was added to the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 2007. Clemons Real Estate and UrbanAmerica, a minority real estate development and investment company based in Grapevine, Texas, have listed this remarkable property.

The price for the property listed on Clemons Real Estate’s website is not specified, but the listing’s brochure states that it is negotiable.

In 2019, UrbanAmerica had made an effort to develop the 21.47 acres as a component of the Enterprise Village Ecosystem. They had proposed a $150 million development for the predominantly vacant land.

The Black Economic Union of Greater Kansas City, which had partnered with UrbanAmerica for the development, was investigated for alleged misuse of funds, derailing the proposal. The Call, the oldest African American weekly newspaper in Kansas City, first reported this story in 2018.

In 1897, the yellow limestone structure was built to replace the old Kansas City Workhouse or municipal jail located across the street.

According to a previous Star story, all cells at the Workhouse Castle had been emptied by 1924 at the latest. In the following decades, the city repurposed the castle for offices and equipment storage. It was even used for Marine training exercises at one point before being completely abandoned in 1972.

According to the brochure, the real estate listing includes these locations surrounding the Workhouse Castle:
