37-year-old paraprofessional and union president from Jersey City passes away

Mocobizscene- A beloved Jersey City school district paraprofessional, who had been a dedicated union president since 2018, has sadly passed away. Keith Olkewicz, aged 37, passed away on Tuesday following a short illness.

Jersey City school district Superintendent Norma Fernandez expressed deep sorrow over the untimely passing of Keith Olkewicz, a valued employee and colleague. She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to his grieving family, friends, and loved ones and assured them that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the entire district community.

He was employed at the Gerard J. Dynes Regional Day School.

As president, one of his final tasks was negotiating a fresh four-year agreement with the district. Under this contract, the 2023-24 school year would see a raise of 4.75%, followed by 3.11% raises for the subsequent three years. Paraprofessionals, who primarily function as teaching assistants or aides, are employed in these roles.

In a social media post, Jim McGreevey, founder and chairman of the New Jersey Reentry Corp., praised Keith Olkewicz for his exceptional qualities of decency, dedication, and determination in serving our Jersey City school district. Adela Rohena, a paraprofessional working at School 26, describes Olkewicz as a true fighter who genuinely cared for the union members he represented.
