Bag Containing $30,000 accidentally left on New York train

Mocobizscene- Two employees of New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority are receiving praise for their commendable act of reuniting a traveler with a lost bag that contained an astonishing $30,000 in cash.

While on a Long Island Rail Road train to Ronkonkoma, Assistant Conductor Christopher Nocito stumbled upon an abandoned bag. MTA workers quickly realized that the bag contained a substantial amount of money. Nocito, in an interview with WABC-TV, mentioned that he was informed of an approximate amount of $30,000 in the package. However, he did not personally count the money.

Detective Kristin Riker from the MTA Police assumed the responsibility of locating the owner of the bag.

Riker explained how he took the initiative to locate the owner of the bag by thoroughly searching its contents. “I carefully examined the bag, hoping to find a receipt or any clue that could lead me to the owner,” Riker recounted.

“Fortunately, I discovered a planner inside the bag. As I flipped through its pages, I noticed that the person had an upcoming appointment to get their car inspected. With this information in hand, I reached out to the mechanic and shared a picture of the individual, seeking their assistance in identifying the owner. This action proved to be the turning point in reconnecting the lost bag with its rightful owner. Thanks to the collaboration between the mechanic, the lost and found department, and myself, we were able to establish contact with the person and ensure that they retrieved their bag.”

The owner was delighted to have their bag and its valuable contents returned to them. Last year, there was a highly publicized incident involving Juliet Barton, who lost a bag containing $12,000 while traveling on LIRR trains from Babylon to Rockville.

MTA workers diligently searched through the bags in the lost and found area until they successfully located Barton’s bag, which still contained the cash.
