10 people injured and 1 child dead in mass shooting in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood

One tragic incident took place in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday evening. According to the authorities, a shooting occurred, resulting in the loss of a young child’s life. Additionally, ten individuals, including three other children, sustained injuries during the incident.

The shooting took place at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the vicinity of West 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue, according to the Chicago police. The individuals who were shot were attending a family gathering at the time of the incident.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving a ShotSpotter alert about 18 rounds being fired. Upon arrival, they discovered several individuals who had been shot. Acting swiftly, the officers immediately administered life-saving measures, such as applying tourniquets and chest seals. Deputy Chief Don Jerome of Chicago Police Area One commended their efforts in providing crucial medical aid.

A one-year-old boy and a seven-year-old boy sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were in critical condition on Saturday night. On the other hand, a nine-year-old boy only suffered a graze wound to his left pinky finger and was reported to be in good condition. The adult victims ranged in age from 19 to 40, according to officials.

Jerome made it clear that the act of violence was not a random occurrence, but rather, it was most likely connected to gang activity. He emphasized that the actions of the offenders were both horrific and unacceptable within their city.

According to a source, the shooting occurred while the children were playing outside. At the time, there were adults present both inside the house and on the porch.

Jose expressed his concern, stating, “I know she’s going to go crazy. She absolutely adores her, and I’m at a loss for words on how to break the news to her.”

Jose’s nephews endured two gunshot wounds to the stomach each, while Jose himself sustained a gunshot injury in his foot.

“I was shot in my leg and feet, but thankfully I’m alright. The bullets went straight through, causing minimal damage,” he shared. “Although my leg is injured, my main concern is my young daughter. She should never have to witness such violence.”

According to the police, a witness reported seeing a black sedan arrive at the gathering. From inside the vehicle, an individual fired several shots before quickly driving away.

Jose’s heart-wrenching account unfolded as he described the harrowing moment he discovered his daughter lying on the floor, a tragic bullet wound in her head. Overwhelmed with grief and desperation, he instinctively rushed to her side, but alas, it was already too late.

According to Jose, they have been residents of the neighborhood for three decades and have never encountered any issues.

“We have absolutely no involvement in any of that. None of us are gang members. We don’t participate in gang activities. We have been living in this neighborhood for over 30 years, and we have never been involved in anything like that.”

He expressed his hope for justice to be served soon.

“Why would they subject innocent children to such cruel treatment? They have their own lives to live. It’s just unfathomable,” he exclaimed.

According to Jose, they were planning to move out of the neighborhood due to the recent shootings.

The devastating impact on the family has been expressed by street pastor Donovan Price.

“I believe a piece of Chicago has perished. Just like the mothers and families I encountered upon my arrival, there should be screams, panic, and tears. All of us should be expressing our grief,” he expressed.

According to police, some witnesses reported seeing two individuals on foot who they believed to be the shooters.

As of Sunday morning, there were no individuals in custody. The investigation is being carried out by Area One detectives.

Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a statement on Sunday afternoon, condemning the shooting as a “heinous and cowardly act of senseless violence.”

Today, we mourn the loss of an 8-year-old girl whose life was tragically taken from her by gang violence. This heinous and cowardly act of wanton violence that leaves our city mourning children is beyond reprehensible and has no place in our communities. We are all allowed to be outraged today – a warm, spring day that I am sure this child would have been enjoying with family. I am praying for her loved ones and her community as they experience the unimaginable pain of losing a child. I am also praying for the recovery of the three children and seven adults who were injured in this horrific shooting. Our Mayor’s Office of Community Safety has been in contact with the Chicago Police Department, which is committed to identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible. The Community Safety Coordination Center has developed an initial response plan, which, among other resources, will consist of:

  • A mass canvassing event at 52nd and Damen and surrounding blocks on Monday, April 15, at 2 p.m. with the purpose of providing the community access to behavioral teams, victim services and case management
  • Financial support for the family of the child who passed away via the Emergency Supplemental Victim’s Fund program
  • Emergency Services Assistance Center, starting today, April 14
  • Victim services to other victims and families
  • Increased 9th District CPD presence at impacted schools

As the CPD and our partners work through their investigation, the Back of the Yards community has the full support of our administration as they process and heal from this trauma.
