On Sunday night, there was a shooting incident on the south side of Indianapolis that left five individuals injured.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a disturbance at Laurelwood Apartments on Teakwood Drive at around 8:15 p.m. Following the initial call, law enforcement received another report that a person had been shot at the location.
Upon arrival at the scene, the police discovered five victims who had sustained injuries that were consistent with gunshot wounds. As per IMPD, all five individuals were hospitalized.
According to law enforcement, a victim is currently in critical condition while the remaining four are believed to be in serious condition.
According to IMPD, a 17-year-old boy was among the victims, while the remaining victims were all adults – three women and one man. The male victim who is in critical condition has not been identified as either the 17-year-old boy or the man, and IMPD has not disclosed who sustained more severe injuries in the shooting.
During their investigation, the police apprehended an individual whose involvement in the incident remains unclear.
IMPD reported that the shooting resulted from a disagreement that originated at a basketball court close by.
According to IMPD Night Watch Captain John Arvin, the community affected by the recent disturbance is a close and tight-knit one. It’s unfortunate that something like this happened due to a basketball game. With young children playing, the humid weather and people getting upset can create a volatile situation. Captain Arvin emphasized the need for finding alternative ways to handle disputes and ensuring the safety of the entire community.
According to authorities, the community is not at risk as a result of the incident. The IMPD’s aggravated assault detectives are currently investigating the shooting.
