A man who allegedly belongs to a violent gang accused of kidnapping four U.S. citizens has been extradited to the U.S. according to Haitian law enforcement authorities. The incident took place in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
According to the Haiti National Police, Jhon Peter Fleronvil is associated with a gang called “Kokorat San Ras,” which means “Cohorts of No Race” in English.
According to police, Fleronvil was extradited on Monday and is facing charges of kidnapping four U.S. citizens in Haiti’s central Artibonite region in July 2022.
According to authorities, Fleronvil attempted to escape to the nearby border with the Dominican Republic when he was apprehended in September in the northern coastal town of Fort Liberte.
The Artibonite region has been plagued by a vicious gang known as Kokorat San Ras, as stated by a recent U.N. report. Despite their small number of approximately 20 members, they are notoriously brutal and have caused widespread violence. Their actions have forced residents to abandon large sections of cropland and have posed a significant threat to agricultural production in the area.
According to the report, the gang is facing accusations of committing murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping, and hijacking of trucks and goods.
In 2021, 16 U.S. missionaries were kidnapped and a Haitian gang leader was extradited to the U.S. for his involvement in the incident. Germine Joly, also known as “Yonyon,” is the alleged leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, which translates to “400 Simpletons.” He was charged in connection with the kidnapping and brought to the U.S. to face trial.
