The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has apprehended a juvenile suspect in connection with a threat made against Pike Road High School.
This morning, Pike Road High School was placed on lockdown, leading to an early dismissal at the Georgia Washington Campus. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has charged the subject, who is now in custody, with making a terrorist threat, a Class C felony.
As the suspect is a minor, the sheriff’s office has declined to provide any further information.
“The Sheriff’s Office takes the security of our schools seriously, and we will relentlessly pursue individuals who threaten the safety of our students,” Assistant Chief Deputy Wesley Richerson said in a statement.
Later in the afternoon, Pike Road Schools released a statement providing further details on what had occurred:
“At about 7:40 am today, one of our teachers reported that a student received a threat via text message. The text message stated an intent to cause harm to students on the Georgia Washington Campus. School administration immediately notified the local authorities and our district administration. The team of administrators and local authorities immediately began investigating the threat.
“At that time, we had already begun taking in students from buses, so we began the lockdown process. All students were told to report to their first-period class for lockdown.
“By 9:45, we determined the need to send students home due to the open nature of the Georgia Washington Campus, the estimated length of the investigation, and the level of support from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department at the time.”
During dismissal, a student experienced a medical emergency, which led to the school calling an ambulance to the campus.
Classes will resume on Tuesday, according to school officials.
