Officers responded to a robbery call in the 000 block of West Fairview Avenue just after 11 a.m., according to Maj. Saba Coleman. Officers quickly discovered that a teenager had carjacked someone at gunpoint.

She stated that cops attempted to pull over the stolen vehicle shortly after in the area of East South Boulevard and Norman Bridge Road, but the driver refused to stop, resulting in a pursuit.

Coleman stated that the fleeing vehicle collided with another vehicle around West Fairview Avenue and South Court Street. There were no reported injuries.

She stated that an 8-year-old boy was apprehended and later charged with first-degree robbery, attempting to evade, and certain persons prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was sent to the Montgomery County Youth Detention Center.

Coleman stated that the gun was found at the scene.

There was no more information provided.

A witness, known as “Snake” Knapp, said he followed the vehicle from the crash scene and recognized along the way that it was being driven by a child, so he alerted police.

“Whenever I realized it was a little boy I knew I had to follow them and make sure no one got hit and that he got caught because don’t want him driving all over Montgomery, causing more accidents or hurting himself or hurting other people,” he said.

According to Knapp, the child picked up two people on Norman Bridge Road.

“I think parents just really need to know where their kids are, what they’re doing, and just talk to them about these kinds of things,” he said.
