Two student organizations, both consisting of veterans, are taking action to contribute towards controlling an epidemic. On Monday, Governor Kay Ivey kicked off Operation Iron Ruck with the participation of student veterans from the University of Alabama and Auburn University.
In an effort to raise awareness and funds for veteran suicide prevention, Operation Iron Ruck has organized a three-day, 151-mile journey. Shockingly, in the year 2021 alone, 143 veterans lost their lives to suicide, making this cause all the more urgent and important.
The exciting journey is set to occur on the Alabama campus and culminate in Auburn, just in time for the highly anticipated Iron Bowl.
All the student veterans participating in the march carried rucksacks filled with 22 pounds of donated items. Once the march concludes, these items will be donated to various veterans organizations across the state.
The event, Montgomery’s Operation Iron Ruck, is underway as shown in the source image from WAKA Action 8 News.
