Montgomery business owner files defamation lawsuit against mayor Steven Reed

Montgomery, Alabama – Charles Lee, the owner of That’s My Child, and That’s My Dog, has sued Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed for defamation.

This is the latest repercussion of audio recordings leaked in February in which Reed went on a profanity-laced rant about Black votes, white investments, and Maxwell Air Force Base. Reed staged a news conference the next day, accusing Lee of illegally leaking the recordings in order to extort him.

Reed also called Lee a “liar,” “shyster”, and “hustler.”

Lee has denied releasing the recordings and has filed a defamation suit against the mayor. Reed is accused of causing Lee’s reputation to suffer.

Lee filed a lawsuit against the city in April, stating that he wanted to sue Reed.

The mayor has previously stated that he intended to sue Lee for extortion. So far, no such lawsuit has been filed.

According to Reed’s lawyer, Joe Espy, “the city and the mayor will vigorously defend and absolutely dispute the contentions made in the lawsuit.”
