A man by the name of Shariko Smith has pleaded guilty to the murder of Marcus “Dale” Martin, which took place on April 30, 2019. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office made the announcement on Tuesday.
Judge James Anderson is set to sentence Smith on September 26, and he could face up to 99 years in prison. Despite the prosecution team’s request that he be taken into custody, Smith remains out on bond until his sentencing hearing.
The prosecution’s news release states that prior to the shooting, Martin had invited Smith to his home, where he had been a guest before. The two men got into an argument while Martin was cooking, and Smith shot Martin multiple times as he tried to flee. Unfortunately, first responders declared Martin dead at the scene.
District Attorney Daryl Bailey issued a statement condemning the heinous act of violence that took place in Martin’s own home. Bailey said that his office is committed to ensuring that Smith’s sentence reflects the severity of his actions and the consequences of committing such a senseless, violent crime.
Bailey also promised that he would do everything in his power to ensure that justice is served for Martin and his loved ones. Smith’s sentencing is still pending, but the guilty plea is a significant step forward in bringing closure to Martin’s family and loved ones.
