In a jail contraband case, US Marshals arrest a former Montgomery County corrections officer

On Tuesday, the United States Marshals Service arrested a former Montgomery County Jail corrections officer for allegedly engaging in criminal acts while employed by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.

Timothy Summerlin, 33, worked in the county jail for more than three years and was reportedly plotting to transfer forbidden materials to federal inmates for an unknown amount of time that ended in February. Summerlin received “an excessive amount of currency as payment” for his role in selling contraband to convicts, according to a news release issued by the US Marshals on Tuesday evening.

Summerlin allegedly assisted in the smuggling of contraband into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, according to the release.

“Corrections officers are held to a high standard of integrity, trust and honor. This investigation has spanned over approximately seven months by my office, and we are not done yet,” said M. Dante Gordon, chief deputy for the Montgomery office of the U.S. Marshals. “There will be more indictments coming very soon.”

U.S. Marshals apprehended Summerlin in the parking lot of the Walmart on Chantilly Parkway with the assistance of the Montgomery Police Department. Officers apprehended Summerlin “without incident,” and he was taken to the federal courthouse in downtown Montgomery.

The judge there charged him with conspiracy to deliver contraband to a prison inmate and bribery of a public employee.

It is unclear how many more people were engaged in the smuggling, but Gordon has pledged that more arrests would be made.
