HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Greyhound Lines Inc. will discontinue its intercity bus services to Huntsville in September 2022. The service, however, will resume on Monday, August 21, following the opening of a new transfer station.
The new Greyhound station is located at 11560 Memorial Parkway Southwest, and tickets will go on sale on August 21.
The station is currently linked to a Texaco station, allowing customers to purchase food and drinks before boarding. It will also offer four new daily schedules with connectivity to Nashville and Birmingham. According to officials, it will soon have a seating area and facilities.
“Greyhound is very pleased to be back in Huntsville. It’s been one year since we served customers in that area, and it feels good to return,” said Eric Jenkins, Greyhound’s District Manager for Alabama. “This station provides customers in Northern Alabama with a cost-effective travel option throughout the region.”
Customers will now be able to book their travel through either the Greyhound or FlixBus websites, thanks to the assistance of its partner brand FlixBus.
In September 2022, News 19 reported that building on a new transfer station for Huntsville Transit would begin. The structure was to be built at 521 Pratt Avenue, next to the existing station on Church Street and would include various modifications over the current station.
According to the contract specifications filed by the city on September 23, 2022, work on the Pratt Avenue location was scheduled to begin within 10 days of the contractor getting a notice to proceed and be finished no later than 365 days after construction began.
Greyhound temporarily discontinued service in Huntsville a few days following the announcement. At the time, a Greyhound representative stated that the company’s future plans included restoring service at the Church Street transit centre and moving service to the planned Huntsville Transit transfer station announced last week.
News 19 reached out to the City of Huntsville and Greyhound to learn more about the Pratt transfer station’s development and why Greyhound opted to move forward and resume service at a different location.
