Gilbreath suggests ways to fix the “trash crisis” in Montgomery

As Montgomery’s Sanitation Department continues to deal with delays in picking up trash and debris, many areas have not had services in more than two weeks.

Chris Conway, who is in charge of public works in Montgomery, told WSFA on Friday that trash pickup plans are behind because there isn’t enough equipment or people to do the job.

“We also do have more routes than manpower would allow if we even had those trucks,” Conway said.

“The sanitation department has promised that they would pick it up, and they have yet to perform,” Don Harris, an east Montgomery resident, told WFSA.

In a smart campaign move, a candidate for mayor of Montgomery is asking people what they think about his plan to solve the “trash crisis” in the city.

Barrett Gilbreath released an online “complaint portal” and a plan for how he plans to deal with the ongoing sanitation problem.

Gilbreath said, “I would hire quality mechanics to ensure trash trucks and related equipment are always ready and regularly maintained, and we would utilize a leasing schedule so we would never be stuck with obsolete or inoperable equipment,”

“I would offer incentives to retired mechanics and other qualified individuals to stay ahead of the issue. As mayor, I would be vigilant in protecting city services because failure is not an option.”

As public sanitation departments work to catch up, some towns’ supply chains and ways of getting rid of trash after the pandemic are moving faster than others. People also don’t like how Montgomery tells its customers about this.

People in Montgomery are using NextDoor to talk about what’s wrong. “Yesterday, I received my bill for water and trash removal,” Kimberly King wrote. “I finally got through today on 311 at 7:00 a.m. after trying all week. I was honestly surprised that someone answered the phone instead of the busy signal greeting that I’ve heard all week.”

Barrett wants those who will be affected to vote in the election on August 22. He said he would use his skills in real estate, business, and the neighbourhood he has lived in since 1996 to solve the “trash crisis.”
