Amsterdam authorities have arrested a man for running a large-scale illegal cannabis farm that was emitting an overwhelming odor. The farm, which was discovered during a routine check, contained thousands of cannabis plants and was located in a residential area. The man has been charged with drug offenses and faces a hefty fine and possible prison time. The authorities have lauded the discovery as a significant blow to the illegal drug trade and a victory for the community’s safety.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a man was apprehended and faced charges for cultivating a significant quantity of cannabis in the Town of Amsterdam last Thursday.
According to the Office, Chuanjin Sun, a 53-year-old Brooklyn resident, was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff on June 6, 2024, for running an extensive cannabis growing operation without a proper permit.
The Office was informed of an overpowering smell of cannabis coming from a building on Chapman Drive, Amsterdam, prompting its Criminal Investigations Unit and the Town of Amsterdam Fire Inspector to take action. They initiated an investigation to determine the possibility of any unlawful activities taking place.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit and the Town of Amsterdam Fire Inspector received a tip about a building on Chapman Drive in Amsterdam emitting an “excessive odor of cannabis.”
Sun, the owner of the building, was discovered on June 6 operating a substantial cannabis growing operation within the premises. The plants were intended for distribution throughout New York State.
The Office of Cannabis Management has officially confirmed that Sun lacked a valid permit issued by the state to carry out its operations at the said location.
The Fire Inspector closed down the building due to hazardous conditions and violations related to fire safety. During the inspection, the Fire Inspector along with the Sheriff’s Office Investigators confiscated more than 2,200 cannabis plants that were 2-3 feet tall.
The authorities took Sun into custody and transported them to the Office for processing. Sun faced charges of first-degree criminal possession and unlawful cultivation of cannabis.
