According to a recent report by WSFA, a Montgomery City Council member is making serious allegations against the fire department. The council member claims that the department is unfairly targeting businesses that serve predominantly Black customers.
As part of their responsibilities, the department is tasked with the duty of inspecting businesses to ensure that they comply with the fire codes set by the city.
According to Councilwoman Marche Johnson, establishments that cater to the Black community, such as Xscape Tapas Grill, are subject to higher rates of fines from inspectors.
She said, “I haven’t been to Pine Bar, Kru, Alley Bar, or 1048, ever.”
According to her, the fire department intentionally targeted specific businesses for fines, leading her to accuse them of doing so.
According to Johnson, there have been reports of a fire marshal leaving a club early, saying, “Let me hurry up and leave so I can catch Xscape before they close.” This behavior is concerning, as it suggests that the fire marshal may not be prioritizing their duties and responsibilities. It is important for all officials, including fire marshals, to take their roles seriously and ensure the safety of the public.
According to Montgomery Fire Chief Miford Jordan, they inspected a total of 17 clubs and it was not their intention to single out any specific club for inspection.
According to the chief, their department is responsible for enforcing fire codes and not creating them.
During the City Council meeting held on Tuesday, a disturbing video was presented by the speaker. In the video, individuals were seen chanting profanity about the fire marshal. This has heightened the concerns of the speaker, who now feels that there is a target on the backs of first responders. Such incidents are alarming and need to be addressed with utmost seriousness.
Jordan expressed his admiration for the firefighters, stating that they are beautiful people. He was deeply saddened by the news of their hardships, and found it heartbreaking to hear about their struggles.
According to the fire chief, the department is committed to serving the community and maintains a fair and consistent approach. This highlights their dedication to their duty and reinforces their willingness to help others.
In expressing her thoughts, Johnson made it clear that she has a deep affection for and stands behind the department. However, she felt compelled to bring attention to this particular matter.
The recent council meeting resulted in the closure of Xscape Tapas Grille. The reason for this decision was due to the establishment’s failure to pay fees associated with overcrowding.
