Mother who ‘intentionally’ pushed woman off DeKalb County cliff wants body cam footage used in murder trial

DEKALB COUNTY, AL ALABAMA – Body cam footage is set to play a role in the trials of a mother and daughter charged in the gruesome death of a missing lady.

Loretta Kay Carr, 43, and Jessie Eden Kelly, 21, were charged with Mary Isbell’s killing, who had been missing since the fall of 2021. Carr “intentionally” caused Isbell’s death, according to court filings, “by pushing her off a cliff.” DCSO Chief Investigator Nick Brown called the women’s treatment of Isbell “inhuman and brutal.”

Carr’s defense team now wants to include body cam footage from cops involved in a search of her home, film from their encounters with her kid, and footage involving Carr’s fiancee, according to court filings.

In early July, a judge granted a motion for a gag order, which forbids witnesses, law officers, court officials, prosecutors, and anyone else involved in the case from discussing any specifics with the media, as well as a motion to prohibit cameras from being used during the proceedings.

Carr is facing the death penalty, according to the state.

One of the ladies cooperated and led officials to Isbell’s remains, which were discovered on June 28 near the Little River Canyon National Park by a search party. The remains were later identified as Isbell’s by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science’s Huntsville Laboratory – on what would have been her 39th birthday.

Investigators also claimed to have discovered physical evidence at Isbell’s residence, which led to the arrests of Carr and Kelly. Carr is suspected of kidnapping Mary Isbell in October 2021, according to a criminal complaint filed on June 26.

Kelly is no longer on the Pennsylvania jail roster. She was being held in jail pending extradition to Missouri, where she had previously been charged with criminal burglary.

Both a preliminary hearing and a bond hearing are set for August 2 at the DeKalb County Courthouse.
