According to reports listed in the Colorado Springs Police Department blotter, two shootings occurred on Sunday, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The first incident happened before 3 a.m. on September 24, where authorities received a report of a shooting at the 3200 block of Divine Heights. Upon reaching the location, officers found a deceased adult male inside an apartment. The department has confirmed that all involved parties have been accounted for, and they do not believe there is a present threat to the public. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is still ongoing.
A shooting incident was reported at around 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of S. Circle Drive. Responding officers found an adult male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound in the leg. According to the victim, the shooting occurred at a different location, and he was shot with a silver AK rifle. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. As of the latest report, no suspect has been arrested, but the police department assures the public that they are not in danger due to this incident.
As per a report published in April 2023 by the Colorado Sun, the number of firearm-related deaths in Colorado remained relatively stable from 1980 to 2000, despite a substantial rise in population of approximately 1.4 million people. However, from 2000 to 2021, the numbers surged, doubling in the midst of an additional 1.5 million people moving to the state. In 2021, Colorado recorded 1059 deaths attributed to firearms.
According to a report by the Colorado Sun, three-quarters of firearm-related deaths are a result of suicides. It is also observed that individuals under the age of 45 are at higher risk of dying by firearm.
