Rescue Team Saves Girl and Grandmother from Rip Current at Jersey Shore

A girl from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and her grandma were rescued from a rip current at an open beach over the weekend, according to Margate City Police.

At 4:36 p.m. on September 16, several people called to say that a 12-year-old girl and her 58-year-old grandma were in trouble at the Wilson Avenue beach.

Officer Brendan Campbell was already on the beach for a different reason. He “immediately responded and ran into the surf,” the police say.

Police say that soon after, Sgt. Chris Taroncher came on an ATV and got into the water to help. Both swimmers were hanging on to a nearby jetty, which helped the police find them.

Authorities say that Campbell and Taroncher each grabbed a victim while fighting their way through the rough surf and rip current.

The Margate City Fire Department helped both swimmers right away, and they were both set free.
