According to the latest update, a man has been apprehended and the shelter-in-place order linked to the shots fired incident in Colorado Springs has been lifted as of 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, Joey Daniel Romero, a 35-year-old man, was taken into custody for his involvement in the incident. Numerous calls reporting someone firing a rifle at an apartment complex near Barnes Road and North Powers Boulevard were received by the Communication Center at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday. As soon as the police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man who was actively shooting a rifle.
After the initial arrival of officers, a containment was established around the suspect who promptly stopped using his weapon. The CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit was then called in to the scene to assist and safely apprehend the suspect. It was reported that the police collected around fifty spent shell casings and that multiple structures were shot multiple times. The suspect was found to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg, which was determined to be non-life-threatening.
During the incident, officers were unable to determine whether the wound was inflicted intentionally or accidentally. Fortunately, no other citizens or officers were shot, and none of the officers discharged their weapons. The suspect was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is now facing multiple felony charges related to the incident. Throughout the ordeal, the Colorado State Patrol and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office provided valuable assistance.
At 10:32 p.m., the police reported that a suspect had been apprehended, and the shelter-in-place order related to this incident has been lifted.
