Police: An Abbeville man ran a red light in Dothan and died shortly afterward

DOTHAN, Ala. – Police say that a guy who ran a red light and then crashed his car early Sunday morning in Dothan died as an officer tried to catch up with him.

Jordan Nicholas Griffin, 25, of Abbeville, was identified as the victim by investigators.

At around 1:30 p.m., an officer observed Griffin running the Denton Road traffic signal, according to Dothan Police Captain Lynn Watkins.

Griffin claimed that as the police tried to catch up with him, he lost control of his automobile after driving through the Family Dollar parking lot on Montgomery Highway.

According to Watkins, the vehicle collided with a utility post and a tree on Chinook Street on the lot’s south side before catching fire.

He feels that an autopsy will reveal the reason for death.

Watkins stated that there was no pursuit since Griffin may have pulled over once the officer approached him.

According to records Griffin has no criminal record in Alabama, and his single traffic ticket was rejected by a judge.
