On Monday, traffic in Colorado Springs was disrupted due to the presence of a bear on I-25. According to reports, the bear was seen on the highway causing congestion and delays.
Around 12:30 p.m., a bear that seemed to be a young cub was spotted on the northbound side of I-25 near the Woodmen exit.
At approximately 12:35 p.m., the bear was successfully guided away from the highway thanks to the assistance of first responders.
According to reports, a bear was hit by a car and sustained serious injuries. Colorado Parks and Wildlife was notified about the incident and made the difficult decision to put the animal down due to the extent of its injuries.
As the season changes, bears are out and about, scouring for food to sustain them through the year and prepare for their winter slumber. This heightened activity of bears serves as a timely reminder for all of us to be “Bear Aware” and take necessary precautions to avoid any potential conflicts with these magnificent creatures.
Bears have a unique feeding behavior known as hyperphagia, which enables them to consume more than 20,000 calories a day. During this period, bears spend almost 20 hours a day foraging and eating to accumulate fat reserves for winter hibernation. For more information on hyperphagia, you can check out this link.
