According to the latest reports, two MTA workers were caught purchasing “unknown merchandise” from shady individuals. The merchandise is suspected to be stolen goods. The incident was brought to the attention of the authorities by a member of the public who claimed that the employees were drinking while on duty.
Last year, an investigation was launched by the MTA Inspector General’s Office into two workers based in Midtown West, a man, and a woman, after receiving a complaint that they were consuming alcohol and purchasing illegal items while on the job.
According to the Inspector General’s office, two employees of the transit and structure maintenance were secretly monitored by agency investigators on May 18, 2022, at MTA trailers on West 44th Street. During the surveillance, it was discovered that the duo had received visits from four individuals in the morning and had exchanged money for goods.
According to the report released by the IG on Monday, it was observed that the supervisor went as far as holding a knife to the neck of one of the visitors, as a way of threatening them. This is a concerning and alarming behavior that should not be condoned in any workplace.
According to the report, the workers were confronted by inspectors a week later. Initially, they tried to deny the accusations, but when they were informed that they had been monitored, they eventually confessed to their wrongdoings.
According to the report, the supervisor, who had been employed with the MTA since 1999, handed over a 1.75-liter bottle of Dewar’s White Label Blended Scotch Whisky to the investigator. He admitted to drinking inside the trailer after his shift ended at 3:00 p.m.
Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against the two employees by the agency, whose identities remained undisclosed in the IG’s report.
As per the agreement with the transit authority, the supervisor officially retired on December 2, 2022.
The MTA is still in the midst of ongoing disciplinary proceedings involving a structure maintainer who has been with the organization since 2019.
According to the IG’s report, a woman and her supervisor were collaborating on a project to replace and repair subway grates along Eight Avenue. The woman was working as a skilled carpenter on the project, while her supervisor was overseeing the entire operation.
As reported, four individuals paid a visit to the duo five times during a three-hour period on May 18, 2022. These individuals engaged in transactions involving goods and money with the duo.
According to investigators, at 6:28 a.m., an individual arrived at the trailer holding a plastic bag filled with undisclosed items. The structure maintainer then proceeded to give them cash before the individual took the bag inside.
According to the report, at 7:34 a.m. on that day, another individual approached the trailer and removed three items from a bag. The supervisor then inspected the objects before proceeding to compensate the person and bring the goods inside.
After a while, a third individual arrived at the trailer carrying a sizable bag. The female worker collected the bag and brought it inside. Following this, the male employee compensated the individual and returned the empty bag. These details were discovered by the investigators.
According to the report, another individual approached the trailer at 8:39 a.m. that same morning. This person left two cases of beer near the trailer, knocked on the door, and then departed with the alcohol when nobody answered.
Following the investigators’ confrontation on May 25, 2022, both individuals were expelled from the work site. Additionally, the supervisor was mandated to undergo a blood alcohol test, although the findings of the test were not revealed in the report.
The two workers are currently under disciplinary proceedings initiated by the agency.
According to a statement from MTA Inspector General Daniel G. Cort, the behavior exhibited by these two individuals is a clear violation of MTA rules and a betrayal of the public’s trust. It’s important to note, however, that the actions of these individuals should not reflect poorly on the many hardworking MTA employees who are committed to serving the people of New York.
