Lawmakers say nursing home evicted 95-year-old veteran to make way for migrant housing

Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, recently spoke out against the proposed conversion of a Staten Island assisted living home into a facility to accommodate the overflow of undocumented migrants in New York City. A press conference was held to express her opposition to the plan.

In a recent news report, a Korean War veteran who is 95 years old shared that he was only given a little over a month to find a new place to live after the nursing home he was residing in was sold to become a facility for undocumented migrants. The situation left him with a sense of urgency and uncertainty, as he had to quickly figure out where to go and how to manage the transition. It’s a difficult situation to be in, especially for someone at his age and with his background, and highlights the challenges that many seniors face when it comes to finding appropriate housing and care.

On Monday, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, who has been vocal about her criticism of New York City’s handling of the migrant crisis, was joined by veteran Frank Tammaro at a press conference to discuss the reported deal.

Tammaro expressed his annoyance towards the way things were done and found it disgraceful how the people in Island Shores, the assisted living facility he was in, were treated.

The new governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, has a clear message for migrants who are considering relocating to the state: “Go somewhere else.” Hochul made this statement during a press conference on September 2, 2021, in response to questions about the influx of migrants at the southern border of the United States. The governor cited the state’s high cost of living and limited resources as reasons why migrants should consider other options.

Frank Tammaro, a veteran of the Korean War, recently shared how he was abruptly asked to leave the Island Shores nursing home with little warning. As reported by WNYW, Tammaro’s unexpected departure highlights the need for improved communication and support for seniors in nursing homes.

According to Tammaro, Island Shores provided them with necessary time to evacuate, but unfortunately, it did not give them sufficient time to voice their disagreement on the decision to evict residents, despite his attempts to do so.

As he reminisced, he recounted the time when a notice was posted on the board, giving them only a month and a half to figure out their next destination. “I remember thinking my suitcases would be left out on the curb because I wasn’t the quickest,” he chuckled.

“When I look back at that moment, I realize that it was my daughter who saved us from being thrown out on the street. The situation was dire, and all I could do was say ‘no’ repeatedly, while they insisted on moving us out. Unfortunately, everything was decided behind closed doors, and we didn’t get a chance to fight back. The time just wasn’t on our side.”

During a recent visit to New York City, President Biden did not meet with mayoral candidate Eric Adams, which has sparked criticism from Adams. In a statement, Adams expressed disappointment about the lack of attention given to the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border. He also noted that he has been vocal about his stance on the issue and available to meet with the President. Adams emphasized that as a potential mayor of one of the largest sanctuary cities in the country, he believes it’s crucial to address the crisis and provide support for immigrants.

Local news outlet SI Live reported that City Councilman David Carr confirmed the opening of a new migrant shelter in New York City. The city’s Department of Social Services informed Carr that the former senior living facility would be converted to a migrant shelter and open this week. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Department of Social Services for confirmation but has not yet received a response as of Tuesday.

Island Shores Senior Residence was unresponsive to Fox News Digital’s attempts to contact them via the phone number listed online. In fact, the facility’s online status is marked as “permanently closed.”

According to Malliotakis, the recently reported deal seems to indicate that our country and city’s priorities are not aligned.

The Democrats in New Jersey are looking at Biden’s plan for migrant housing as a crucial issue in the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, the Republicans are gaining momentum by focusing on the crisis that has emerged from New York City.

On September 5, 2023, the Arrochar community and its supporters held a protest against the proposed plan of New York City to repurpose the closed St. John Villa Academy, a Catholic school, into a migrant shelter. The residents and supporters expressed their opposition to the plan, which could potentially affect the safety and security of the neighborhood. Andrew Lichtenstein’s photo captured the intensity of the protest, highlighting the community’s determination to protect their homes and families.

According to the GOP lawmaker, learning about Homes for the Homeless partnering with the City of New York to convert Island Shores into a migrant shelter caused their blood pressure to skyrocket.

“As citizens of New York, we strongly believe that our hard-earned tax dollars should not be used to accommodate individuals from other countries. It is unfair and unjustifiable, especially when it comes at the cost of our senior citizens and veterans who have dedicated their lives to serving our country, paying taxes and contributing to the growth of our communities.”

Over the past year, a significant number of migrants have migrated to New York City, causing strain on the city’s infrastructure and posing challenges to housing officials due to the overwhelming demand for accommodation.

On Tuesday, a judge supported the decision made by Staten Island lawmakers that a migrant facility in the borough, which was previously a Catholic school, must shut down.
