A woman from East Harlem suspects that her deceased aunt may have been one of the early victims of the Gilgo Beach murder suspect, Rex Heuermann. She reached out to the Nassau District Attorney’s Office, which prompted a team of detectives to launch an investigation into the cold case that has remained unsolved for years. The woman strongly believes that her aunt’s case is linked to the Gilgo Beach murders and hopes that the investigation will lead to closure and justice for the victims and their families.
As reported by Radar Online, a Manhattan-based architect and a father of two has recently been accused of committing the heinous murders of three women in late 2010. The victims, identified as Megan Water, aged 22, Melissa Barthelemy, aged 24, and Amber Lynn Costello, aged 27, were found dead, and since then, the case has been shrouded in mystery.
It is believed that Heuermann is the main individual responsible for the tragic and untimely death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who was only 25 years old at the time.
Carmen Vargas, who was Figueroa’s aunt, was discovered dead on the side of the road in Freeport, New York, on September 11, 1989. It was a tragic incident, and it took three years to identify her.
After conducting a thorough examination, it was established that the dental records belonged to Vargas, confirming that it was indeed her remains that were discovered.
After years of believing that the killer of her sister, Melissa Vargas, was the infamous serial killer Joel Rifkin, the woman now has reason to believe that the Gilgo Beach suspect is responsible for her sister’s death. The revelation has opened up old wounds and brought about a renewed sense of hope for justice.
During an interview with The U.S. Sun, Figueroa revealed that Joel Rifkin denied involvement in the case, stating, “That’s not me. That’s not my work.” Despite initial suspicions, Figueroa and his team eventually let go of their belief that Rifkin was connected to the Long Island serial killer case.
In addition, she clarified, “He didn’t shy away from taking responsibility for his actions. He even confessed to the murders of 17 women and owned up to every one of them.”
After examining the cases that Heuermann is currently facing charges for, it is difficult not to notice the uncanny similarities between them. This has led to speculation that Heuermann may in fact be the perpetrator behind all of them.
In July, RadarOnline.com exclusively learned that the suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders had been hit with six-figure tax liens prior to being linked to the heinous crimes. This new development sheds light on his financial struggles leading up to the murders.
When looking back on 1989, Figueroa remembers being the last person to have seen her aunt alive. She recalls Vargas getting into a dark car, but being only 12 years old at the time, her vision was not completely clear.
About 8 miles away from Heuermann’s childhood home, where his family still resides, is where Vargas was discovered.

Following the apprehension of the Gilgo Beach suspect, she promptly reached out to the Nassau District Attorney’s Office. In response, a dedicated team of detectives was dispatched to thoroughly investigate the case at hand.
In a recent statement, Brendan Brosh, the communications director, confirmed that Vargas’ case is currently under re-examination.
Brosh stated that they are collaborating with law enforcement partners to examine unresolved homicide cases that coincide with the suspected modus operandi of Rex Heuermann. As for the inquiry into the killing of Carmen Vargas, Brosh suggested referring to the Nassau County Police Department since they are the primary investigating agency.
