A shoplifting suspect accused of stealing merchandise worth more than $4,000 was tracked down by employees at an Iowa City grocery store using EBT information.

According to the staff members of Waterfront Hy-Vee, they noticed a customer last June who was scanning some items at the self-check-out aisle, but was putting other items directly into plastic bags without scanning them. The Hy-Vee security team used the EBT card number of the woman from the receipt to track down the dates and times of her previous purchases and reviewed the corresponding security footage. After the investigation, it was found that the suspect, Shelby Clinton of Brookwood Drive and aged 48, had stolen a total of $4,165.71 worth of merchandise during multiple visits between March and June.

Clinton has been accused of 2nd Degree Theft and, if proven guilty, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
