Genesee County trends: homelessness on the rise

Departmental reviews can often be dull and uninspiring, as they merely present a list of statistics, staffing updates, and government initiatives.

According to Social Services Commissioner Carla Mindler, the statistics reveal certain trends, including a noticeable surge in homelessness following the lifting of the COVID-era eviction moratorium in 2022. Mindler highlights that this increase in homelessness is quite significant.

According to the speaker, there has been a significant surge in homelessness lately. The eviction moratorium was lifted in 2022, but not all landlords were able to evict tenants immediately. This is because if they opted for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), they had to commit to not evicting the tenant for 12 months due to non-payment of rent. However, the speaker noted that some of these cases were left pending for a while, and now landlords are taking action and evicting tenants who are unable to pay their rent.
