Firefighters in Luverne diligently combat rising flames

Late last night, multiple local fire departments responded to a call about a burning chicken house on Davis Pond Road. As of now, crews are still trying to put out the flames.

The community’s residents noticed the glow and smoke and sprang into action by calling 911 and attempting to contain the fire until the first responders arrived.

Firefighters arrived to find one structure completely ablaze and the fire threatening to spread. It remains unclear what caused the fire, according to Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Simmons.

He said, “I haven’t talked to the owners yet to try to figure out what happened. When we got here, it was well over half engulfed in flames, and it had started to try to spread up to a storage building on the other side. The good thing is there is no propane or any kind of accelerant inside.”

Robert Fulton, a Koch Foods representative, stated that no chickens were injured since the building was vacant when the fire broke out.

He added, “It was an empty house with no birds in it. It was getting ready to get birds in it Monday, so we’ve been working on it trying to get it ready, and there were seven truckloads of fresh pine shavings inside there.”

As firefighters continue to extinguish the fire, no further information is available at this time.
