On Thursday night, a tragic incident occurred as a young 9-year-old boy was taken off of life support. The incident happened just a few days before when he was hit by a truck on the street outside of his San Leon residence.
At around 7:30 p.m., Benjamin Dennis and his 6-year-old sister Savannah were getting ready to embark on a bike ride with a grown-up. As captured on surveillance footage, just before they left, Benjamin rode his bike onto 22nd Street. Unfortunately, a truck that was turning left from FM 517 hit the young boy.
According to Savannah, she was standing beside the road when she saw the truck heading towards a person. Without wasting any time, she ran towards the road and called out the person’s name. She quickly pulled him away from behind the truck to prevent any further harm. Her quick thinking and action helped save the person’s life.
While the incident occurred, the mother of the children was busy cooking inside their house.
Sarah Touchet, the mother of the individual in question, recounted the traumatic experience and shared, “I simply kept taking deep breaths and pleaded with him to remain with me.”
Touchet shared that the family was informed by doctors that the individual was declared brain dead shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
After being on life support for some time, the fourth-grader at Lobit Elementary was taken off it on Thursday night. In a selfless act, the family decided to donate his organs, which could help save the lives of others in need.
As per the crash report, the driver stayed at the accident spot. The report mentions that the driver halted on FM 517 and made a turn, but unfortunately, he couldn’t spot Benjamin.
According to the child’s family, the man did not come to a complete stop before turning, as seen in their surveillance video.
According to Benjamin’s grandmother, Nancy Suffield, it was evident from the video footage that the driver had no prior knowledge of hitting someone. “You could look at the video and tell me he never saw him,” she said. She further added that the driver realized that he had hit someone only after the incident had occurred, and by then, it was already too late.
Just a few weeks before Benjamin’s tragic accident, another motorcycle crash claimed the lives of two individuals at the same intersection. Touchet, who happened to be at home during the incident, immediately rushed to the scene to offer assistance.
In honor of the victims of the crash, a memorial cross has been erected.
Touchet quipped, “As if that wasn’t already enough?”
According to the family, reckless driving has become a daily occurrence, with drivers frequently exceeding the speed limit of 50 mph. To prevent further tragic losses of life, they are urging authorities to install a traffic light at the intersection.
Suffield expressed his deep sorrow, stating that he could not bring his grandson back. He humbly requested for someone to extend a helping hand in completing the task at hand. “We’re asking for somebody to reach out and get this done, help us get this done, please,” he said.
