Making history and breaking barriers within the New York City police department is exactly what she’s doing.
On Monday, Dr. Lynn O’Connor made history by becoming the first Black female surgeon to be sworn in as a member of the NYPD medical division. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Dr. O’Connor’s dedication and skills in the field of medicine. Her appointment is a step forward in promoting diversity and inclusivity in law enforcement and healthcare. Dr. O’Connor, the first Black female police surgeon for the New York City Police Department, is delighted to be sworn in. The doctor has a crucial role in assessing the fitness for duty of uniformed officers. Additionally, they are responsible for attending to hospitalized members who have sustained injuries or are seriously ill. The doctor must closely monitor their progress and provide necessary consultations in their area of medical expertise.
As the chief of colon and rectal surgery at Mercy Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital, O’Connor understands the importance of her dual roles. Combining her expertise in both fields could potentially lead to life-saving measures for her patients.
According to O’Connor, the significance of this position lies in the fact that there has been a rise in the number of younger patients diagnosed with the condition. He emphasized that the hospital has a younger workforce, and it is worrisome to see patients in their 30s and 40s being diagnosed with the disease.
After taking the oath, O’Connor’s daughter expressed her admiration and appreciation for her mother’s accomplishment.
Danielle Harris expressed her excitement upon hearing the news. She also acknowledged that it was not surprising since the individual in question is a rockstar. According to her, the person is the ideal candidate for the job because of her passion and dedication to it. This shows that Danielle has a high regard for the individual and is confident in her abilities.
After completing her master’s in public health at Yale, Dr. O’Connor went on to earn her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine.
After finishing her high school education, she pursued her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University, where she successfully completed her undergraduate studies.
