An ex-Atlantic City basketball prodigy who is now incarcerated for drug trafficking has confessed to paying for a murder.
When Lamir King was killed in 2019, Khalif Toombs was already serving time in federal prison. However, Toombs was later charged with the murder of King in 2021. Recently, the convicted Atlantic City drug ring leader has been accused of ordering the killing.
According to charges, Jamie Sewell was apprehended with the help of surveillance footage. The video reportedly showed Sewell approaching King’s parked car at Lincoln, brandishing a firearm, and subsequently firing it. The footage also showed Sewell limping away from the scene, which was consistent with his gait in other recorded videos, as reported by BreakingAC.
According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Sewell, who is now 58 years old, has already pleaded guilty and is expected to face a sentence of 10 to 20 years later this year.
Toombs, who was once a rising star in the local basketball scene, is currently serving a 135-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a drug-trafficking operation.
As of October 19th, he has been held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility and will continue to be detained until his sentencing on November 2nd.
According to the records of the Bureau of Prison, he is expected to serve a concurrent 12-year term with no parole for 85 percent, as per the No Early Release Act. This term is set to run alongside his federal term, which is scheduled to end on August 2, 2028.
Toombs will receive credit for approximately a year, which spans from the time he was charged last year.
