CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A man from Graysville lost his life after being hit by a car on Brainerd Road on Sunday night.
The deceased, identified as Jack Taylor, was 80 years old. According to the Chattanooga Police Department, Taylor was trying to cross the 5600 block of Brainerd Road at around 9:30 PM and walked directly into the path of an oncoming silver Audi.
Taylor was taken to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. The police department has notified Taylor’s relatives, and they stated that there will be no charges filed in relation to this accident. However, the department wants to remind pedestrians to follow safety tips to avoid similar accidents.
The police department added that the number of pedestrian accidents this year is similar to last year, but the number of fatal accidents has significantly increased. This year, ten pedestrian accidents have been fatal, compared to three at this time last year. In the entire previous year, there were six pedestrian deaths.
CPD pedestrian safety advice:
- To cross a road, use a crosswalk at an intersection controlled by a traffic signal or stop sign.
- Enter the roadway only when the walk signal is activated.
- Every time you cross the street, look both ways.
- Even if you have the right of way, get a visual commitment from the motorist before crossing.
- When walking, use bright or reflective clothing to make oneself more visible to automobiles.
