The Prattville Police Department wants you to be aware of new Laws in Alabama

Along with the famous new cell phone law, the Alabama legislature recently passed a number of other Acts that will go into effect in the next month or so. The PPD would like everyone to know about these Acts. So, with that in mind, here is the latest edition of “Recent Alabama laws that some people on the Internet won’t like” (insert booming, echoing announcer voice).

Act 2023-93 says it is illegal to smoke or vape in a closed car with a child under 14 inside.

Starting August 1 of this year, it will be against the law for anyone to smoke or vape in a car with a child younger than 14 years old. This rule applies to all motor cars, whether they are moving or sitting still and whether their windows are open or closed. This new violation of the law can only be charged after a car has been stopped legally because there is reasonable cause that it broke another law. If you break this rule, you can get a ticket (fine) of up to $100 for each violation.

In short, don’t smoke or vape in your car with kids inside. This includes e-liquids that don’t have nicotine. We all know what smoke from cigarettes and other things that can be burned can do to our lungs. You’d be surprised at what they’ve found in vape “smoke” that’s also getting in there. so why expose your kids to it? (Parents, there’s another talk that needs to be had about vapes and kids…maybe another time…)

Oh, and this doesn’t include smoking drugs in front of children…that could get you charged with a crime (26-15-3.2, Chemically Endangering a Child).

Always feel free to call us if you need us.
